Dark Skies Are a Shared Heritage

For most of human history, the night sky was a constant companion — a source of wonder, navigation, and myth. Today, over one-third of humanity cannot see the Milky Way from where they live. Light pollution erases our access to the cosmos one streetlight at a time.

Dark Sky Atlas exists to celebrate the places where darkness is still preserved, and to inspire the communities, photographers, and astronomers who protect them. Every destination listed here has been evaluated for sky quality, accessibility, and ecological sensitivity.

We are advocates, not advertisers. No sponsored listings. No commercial rankings. Only the sky, and the science behind it.

The Bortle Scale

Developed by John Bortle in 2001, the scale measures sky brightness from 1 (pristine) to 9 (inner-city).
